Basic hardware setup for recording to PC computer (XP) [View all]

I am looking to record with friends online. They share sound files to add parts and some use the sound software Audacity.

I am looking for ideas regarding hardware input methods for a guitar and a mic (mixer? soundcard? USB?) and a good amplifier/effects emulating software.
