Is Garfield technically a child, or do childlike animals count? Agree about the Garfield strip. Garfield is kind of a dick, but how much mileage can you get out of a cartoon cat who's obsessed with food? Real cats are obsessed with food. The problem with cartoon animals is that eventually they become too human, and then the humor about their animal characteristics is lost. Garfield was funnier when he was more like a cat. Nermal is just a prop. So are the humans.

Lucy works as a character because she provides a contrast to the other characters. Charlie Brown is sort of downtrodden; I could always relate to him when I was a kid (hoping for a valentine that never came) and Lucy regularly picks on him with her football trick. You'd think he'd learn, but hope springs eternal. Maybe that's the lesson, but I've always kind of wanted Charlie Brown to kick her butt. I sort of like it that a kids' comic strip has a villain, though.
