Those contented populations tend to live in mixed economies that blend capitalism with socialism, but with less of the fear-mongering that characterizes American life. The U.S. has a mixed economy as well and at one time it led to the most prosperous middle class the nation has ever had and was improving standards of living incrementally. Now that the post-Reagan fever dream has finally reached its apex, we are poised to plunge even further below those happy Europeans than we already were.
