Record companies in the 60's were notorious for interfering with artists and their names, and TV shows were run by old fogies with little clue about what was really happening. Talking Heads put out out an album called, "The Name of this Band is Talking Heads" because they were annoyed at being called The Talking Heads. Frank Zappa's back-up band, The Mothers, was called The Mothers of Invention by their record company - I'm sure you can guess why. Here's a partial list of bands that actually don't have "The" in their names:

Beasties Boys
BeeGees
Buzzcocks
Foo Fighters
Grateful Dead
Pixies
Pretenders
Ramones
Eagles
Scorpions

Now, let's pick one: Pretenders. Their album "Get Close" has The Pretenders on it, but that's the only one (aside from the greatest hots collection). Chrissie Hynde was furious; reissues of the album has no "The".
