Can someone tell me if it's the 60th anniversary of Pink Floyd?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Emile (a host of the General Discussion forum).

Metas says it's not.
Did they not start in England in 1965?

The founding members of Pink Floyd were:
Syd Barrett (lead vocalist and guitarist)
Roger Waters (bassist and co-lead vocalist)
Nick Mason (drummer)
Richard Wright (keyboard player)

the surviving members of Pink Floyd won't have anything to do with him because of his outspoken support of Russia and, generally, facist views.

and the name appeared during the year (they had been The Tea Set, or a few weird names that may have been used just once, before settling on Pink Floyd), and it was also 1965 in which those 4 became the group, as others dropped out.

See https://www.loudersound.com/features/pink-floyd-the-early-years for the story of them playing, along with a Cambridge group featuring David Gilmour, at a private party in October 1965. And try and guess who the guest musician who somehow ended up playing with the Gilmour group was. I guarantee you've heard of him.

...and were set to play a festival when they found out another band were to be there also called The Tea Set. They fashioned their new name on the spot after bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Pink Floyd is one of my top five bands of all time. Their early stuff is difficult and their late stuff is banal, but in between they were the thinking man's progressive rock band. They had a run of five albums - Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall - which were all amazing.

Yes, I know Obscured by Clouds was in between Meddle and Dark Side, but it's a soundtrack and thus doesn't count!

What a great band.

They were once called The Originals, but another band calling themselves The Originals led them to be the New Originals until The Originals broke up, then they went back to being The Originals. They then became the Thamesmen before settling on Spinal Tap.

You can read it on their album covers and sometimes before playing on a TV show in the 60s they are introduced as "The" Pink Floyd.

Record companies in the 60's were notorious for interfering with artists and their names, and TV shows were run by old fogies with little clue about what was really happening. Talking Heads put out out an album called, "The Name of this Band is Talking Heads" because they were annoyed at being called The Talking Heads. Frank Zappa's back-up band, The Mothers, was called The Mothers of Invention by their record company - I'm sure you can guess why. Here's a partial list of bands that actually don't have "The" in their names:

Beasties Boys
BeeGees
Buzzcocks
Foo Fighters
Grateful Dead
Pixies
Pretenders
Ramones
Eagles
Scorpions

Now, let's pick one: Pretenders. Their album "Get Close" has The Pretenders on it, but that's the only one (aside from the greatest hots collection). Chrissie Hynde was furious; reissues of the album has no "The".
