13. It rarely snows here

Maybe every 5-7 years we will get a snow or ice event. Sometimes ice first then snow or vice versa.

Doesn’t really matter which comes first because we do not have the infrastructure to deal with either. We don’t have enough snow plows to plow the roads.

They try to keep the interstate clear of course but the city proper just pretty much shuts down. People will get out their cross country skis and sleds and find the nearest hill.

It’s actually quite peaceful. I think it took them almost a week to plow our road once. No big deal for us.

But yeah, it can get messy quick. Once it hit right before rush hour and folks were caught out in it during their commute. The hills were a mess. That time we had 5 cars parked on the small two-lane road in front of our house for almost a week. That first evening, we watched from our dining room as folks tried to navigate our curve, often unsuccessfully. Up or down, didn’t matter; they got stuck. The city closed some main roads and folks thought our road would be better. It was not.

One guy was going uphill around our corner and couldn’t go any further on the snow covered ice. He gunned it, making his tires spin loudly. Had he actually caught any pavement he would’ve launched into a house. Pure idiocy.

There are over a million in our metro area. Few of those folks can drive in snow and fewer on ice. So, “snow emergency”.
