D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a "snow emergency for Washington D.C."

Schools are closed tomorrow and they are urging people to move their cars if they are in a snow route.

The symbolism for Donald Trump's election certification isn't lost on me.

anyway. I do not know who or if Repugs or Dems or both who left.

Maybe they came back already. We shall see.

Is this meant to scare people or make them panic? Or move money around for the city?

But we do get snow sometimes. I've heard of severe storm warnings, I've just never heard of a "snow emergency."

Snow or slick roads can be very dangerous. When we had 2 feet of snow they had to call the national guard to get people to shelters. If it turns to ice trees and power lines go down, think being stranded on I-95 .

the United States or Canada. The precise meaning of "snow emergency" varies depending on the issuing municipality. Around here in South Central Pennsylvania, a snow emergency generally activates parking restrictions associated with snow emergency routes. Snow emergency routes have been designated in many towns and cities comprising many of the most important streets and roads. When a snow emergency alert is issued, all vehicles parked on those streets where signage indicates no parking during these times are required, by law, to be moved elsewhere to allow snow plowing of the road surface and to ensure emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances can get through to respond to actual emergencies.

Maybe every 5-7 years we will get a snow or ice event. Sometimes ice first then snow or vice versa.

Doesn’t really matter which comes first because we do not have the infrastructure to deal with either. We don’t have enough snow plows to plow the roads.

They try to keep the interstate clear of course but the city proper just pretty much shuts down. People will get out their cross country skis and sleds and find the nearest hill.

It’s actually quite peaceful. I think it took them almost a week to plow our road once. No big deal for us.

But yeah, it can get messy quick. Once it hit right before rush hour and folks were caught out in it during their commute. The hills were a mess. That time we had 5 cars parked on the small two-lane road in front of our house for almost a week. That first evening, we watched from our dining room as folks tried to navigate our curve, often unsuccessfully. Up or down, didn’t matter; they got stuck. The city closed some main roads and folks thought our road would be better. It was not.

One guy was going uphill around our corner and couldn’t go any further on the snow covered ice. He gunned it, making his tires spin loudly. Had he actually caught any pavement he would’ve launched into a house. Pure idiocy.

There are over a million in our metro area. Few of those folks can drive in snow and fewer on ice. So, “snow emergency”.

halt when it snows. Nobody cleans off sidewalks, so was amazed at the number of my co-workers who showed up in leg and arm casts. Traffic stopped on Connecticut Ave., a main thoroughfare, so people could walk there safely because it got somewhat plowed. Am a lifelong Floridian, so was my first (only) experience dealing with ice and snow.

I received 3 recorded messages from my county government that manages our roads. I missed the first call. The second call was

around 3 or 4 p.m. to announce a level 1 snow emergency. Don't travel unless necessary.

Third call around 7 p.m. It was to announce a level 2 snow emergency. All roads are closed. You can be arrested if you aren't on your

way to work, the hospital, etc. Suggested calling your employer to see if you should come to work.

I am 71.

This is the first time any county I have lived in actually called my home for alerts.
