based on what they told me in 12 years of Catholic schools, the birth and death of Jesus fulfilled what was foretold in the Old Testament (well, the OT was cherrypicked and re-interpreted to make it look that way), or Judaism was the parent and Christianity was the brash, young kid about to make his way in the greater world. Realistically, it was more about seizing and keeping power after the western Roman empire collapsed.
