After 9/11 Congress rushed through the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001," better known as the USA PATRIOT Act (which has been softened to "Patriot Act." )
The PATRIOT Act was passed by the House on October 24, the Senate on October 25, and signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26. Many members complained they had not had time to read the 342 page document, much less hold hearings on its scope. The RW used the sense of urgency caused by the terrorist attacks to pass a "wish list" of things which would have been rejected out-of-hand otherwise.
The Act allowed for warrantless wiretaps and searches of business records, monitoring individuals without their knowledge, the use of "sneak and peek" warrants, indefinite detention of non-citizens without trial, increased racial and religious profiling, particularly targeting Muslim and Arab communities. The Act granted significant powers to law enforcement agencies with limited oversight, leading to concerns about potential abuse of power and the lack of accountability.
That's possibly the best example of "never waste a crisis" in recent times. That's what we're seeing now. T***p and his supporters are lying about the events in New Orleans to create a crisis that they intend to use to shove horribly unqualified and dangerous people into positions of power. There is speculation that he will use the "crisis at the border" to declare martial law (not marshal law), which will be hidden behind an innocuous name. Anyone who objects will be jailed indefinitely. Protests will be met with deadly force. And Congress will be forced into recess by T***p "until the crisis passes," giving Felon47 the power he so craves -- to be a dictator.
"Stay woke," everybody.
