Turns out he told her he didn't care. Apparently he was only looking for a son to bring into his business. His eldest and namesake, Mary's father, didn't work out - he had friends and ambitions and became a commercial pilot at the start of the jet age. However, his father disapproved, called him "a bus driver in the sky." And he eventually died of alcoholism. But his younger brother Donald worked out well, his father made him vice president of his company, paying him accordingly, while others did the actual work.

And after his father died, Donald tried to disinherit his remaining siblings - until his mother found out. But he was still so desperate for money since any business he started failed badly, so he eventually sold his father's lucrative company at a loss. I'm getting this from Mary Trump's book.
