Local Union Laborers Rally For Bernie Sanders [View all]

(Ottumwa, IA) – The Iowa Caucuses are just over two months away and as the race for the Democratic primary continues to heat up, some local workers are rallying for Senator Bernie Sanders.

Members from several different Union halls in southeast Iowa met at UFCW Local 230 in Ottumwa, to rally support for Sanders. Joining them was an Ohio man, Chuck Denison, who lost his job after the General Motors factory in his hometown closed its doors. Now, Denison is traveling cross the Midwest, speaking with union laborers about why he’s pulling for Sanders in the upcoming election.

The group spoke about raising union wages, health care for all, and the platform of a man that they say is the only candidate with a proven track record of supporting the working man.

“The biggest thing is, the more organized our industry is, the better off we are, the better off everybody is. Raising wages across the board, if people are able to organize, and have more democracy in the workplace, we’re able to earn and get better benefits through insurance, health care, and retirement,” said Riley Waters of IBEW Local 13.
