Disney updates content warning for racism in classic films [View all]

A content advisory notice for racism in classic Disney films, in place since last year, has been updated with a strengthened message.

When played on the Disney+ streaming service, films such as Dumbo, Peter Pan and Jungle Book now flash up with a warning about stereotypes.

"This programme includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures," the warning says.

"These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now."

I missed out on the Disney indoctrination as a child. I'll have to ask my parents about that. It was pretty clear they didn't like Disney, not just for the racism but other reasons I'm sure. They are both free-spirited artists who had other work by necessity. When they retired on my dad's union pension and Social Security they became full time artists.

Me and my siblings had to rely on our grandmother for our Disney fix, at the movies, and on television. I saw "Mary Poppins" in the movie theater with my grandmother. That's the first popcorn-soda-and-candy movie experience I clearly recall.

P. L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins, hated the movie.

The relationship between Travers and Disney was "Disneyfied" again in the movie Saving Mr. Banks.
