This is not an action movie. It is about a comic-book character, but it is neither funny nor campy. It is a deep, dark psychological drama that will make you uncomfortable, make you cringe, possibly make you cry. This is profound social commentary that will shake your soul. It is a character study that, in my understanding, will exist as a standalone, not a part of the DC-Universe. Is there violence? Yes, as one would expect in an origin story of the Joker. But this film does not glorify violence as some suggest. There are plenty of films out there that DO glorify violence. You all know which ones they are. This is not one of them. This film mourns violence. Be forewarned that it will affect you. I was left feeling drained, emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted. It is intense. If you love movies, see this film. Joaquin Phoenix gives an Oscar-worthy performance. He is stunning. This is a once in a lifetime role, and not to be missed if you love the arts. This IS art at its best.
