A very permanent solution to a temporary situation: Suicide [View all]

Guns are used in more than half of the successful suicides. Oh but they'll only use a different method if we take guns away cry the pro gun side.

Bullshit.

Of the unsuccessful suicides only 1 in five try a second time. But if the gunners are right then the suicide rate would remain constant as other methods supplanted the use of guns.

Witness Australia that enacted rigid gun control in 1996 and greatly reduced the availability of guns. The suicide rate by all means for men of fell from a high of 25/100,000 in 1997 to 15/100,000 in 2005 and has remained there, a decrease of 40% (some studies show a decrease of much more). The suicide rate for women, who typically use non-violent methods of suicide such as drugs and poison, remained the same at 5/100,000.

The suicide rate for all age groups of men declined from 1997 forward with only the ages 40 to 50 remaining level at about 20/100,000. The decline for young men ages 20 to 40 showed the most dramatic declines.

So it seems that the wishful thinking of gunners to hold guns blameless is just that, wishful thinking. Guns are very effective at taking life and it only takes a moment of despair to pull the trigger and apply a very permanent solution to a temporary situation.
