(NJ) Gun bill proposed by Rep. Bill Pascrell would raise taxes on weapons, ammunition [View all]

(snip)

Rep. Bill Pascrell announced the Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act. The bill would provide $600 million to law enforcement each year by increasing taxes associated with purchasing firearms and ammunition.

The goal is to help keep New Jersey safe and provide a means for law enforcement to do their jobs, according to Pascrell.

Pascrell says the legislation is a long time coming. "The tax on handguns was last increased in 1955," he says. "Worse yet, the tax rate on ammunition and other types of firearms has remained the same since 1941."

The proposal increases excise taxes on guns from between 10 and 11 percent up to a 20 percent tax. The tax on ammunition would jump 50 percent.
