The 100% True Story of the Day my Wife learned about MRAs [View all]

We were taking our walk this morning and the conversation turned towards the fact that her two oldest sisters were raised by their father (not her father) because he had sought and won custody on the grounds that he was an electrical engineer and she was a barmaid.

We talked about how this man who made $600.00 a week (this was the 60's) gave her $40.00 a week for all expenses related to groceries and their two children including clothing them. He felt they should make do and wear hand me downs and all that. Eventually he started hitting her to make his point and that was when she had enough.

So I mentioned to her that some people claim that men get the short end of the stick in custody cases but that is because they do not factor in that most men do not want custody and that when a man wants custody he usually has the power to make it happen.

I told her these people were MRAs; Men's Rights Activists.

She burst out laughing and continued to laugh for about 20 seconds. She had never heard of them and the mere thought of such a thing struck her as one of the silliest things she had ever heard.

We both had a good laugh, shook our heads, and moved on to other topics.
