Bettelheim - though he has been discounted because of his heinous theories on the causes of autism (he coined the phrase "refrigerator mother&quot - had some very interesting ideas about fairy tales as being the places where we work out the darker aspects of all of our psyches, and where we come to accept that darkness that is in all of us.
