The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a huge organization that started in 1954. They push stuff like this. It's all part of this "Muscular Christianity" stuff that is promoting "patriotic duty, discipline, self-sacrifice, masculinity, and the moral and physical beauty of athleticism."

They are hand in glove with hyperpatriotic Air Force Flyovers at sporting events, gigantic American flags covering football & baseball fields, grandiose extended performances of the National Anthem, keeping the 7th inning "God Bless America" going indefinitely after 9/11. And they totally squash and attack anyone not completely on board with all of it.
