We thought we could clean up the environment, stop the Vietnam War, and keep the US out of future useless wars.

We also expected that we could always find decent-paying jobs, stay in the middle class or rise up to it, and retire with a pension and Social Security to live on. Medical bills were affordable back then. We could afford to see a dentist, get our cars fixed, save up for something special like traveling overseas.

Gosh, were we ever delusional! What on earth were we smoking?
