Nevada may become first state to let motorcyclists drive between traffic lanes [View all]

Nevada could become the first state in the nation to allow motorcyclists to legally drive between two lanes of traffic.

The maneuver, known as lane splitting, is currently illegal in 49 states. It has been unofficially permitted in California for decades, with no law specifically allowing or prohibiting the practice. An attempt to legalize it in Arizona was vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, in 2010.

Supporters argue lane splitting reduces the likelihood of a motorcycle hitting a car in front, and vice versa, especially in heavy traffic. Detractors argue lane splitting is inherently dangerous and distracts from other safety issues such as mandatory helmet laws.

Nevada’s bill would allow motorcyclists to drive between cars as long as they don’t exceed 30 mph and don’t go more than 10 mph than the flow of traffic. That’s different from California where there are no legal limits on lane splitting, despite the California Highway Patrol asking it be done only below 30 mph.
