This is one of the best historical novels I've ever read. I read it the first time about 30 years ago. I was still working then, and I read it in the middle of a work week. It was just about impossible to put down, and I had to go to work with very little sleep a couple of days. It's set in ancient Egypt, hundreds of years before the Egyptians ever saw a Hebrew or a horse or a chariot. The central character is a true Renaissance man, 3500 years before the Renaissance, but he's a slave to the royal family. It was so good, it's about time I was re-reading it.

I gave up on "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons, which I was trying to get into last week. One of the posters here said s/he had also tried to get into it, but it was a real slog. I found it to be a slog, too.
