Al Qaeda terrorist tend to blow themselves up. That tactic somewhat limits their ability to take charge and rule our nation.

Assault style semi-automatic rifles are useful for target shooting, hunting and in rural areas for self defense. It may be possible that they would be somewhat useful in overthrowing a far future tyrannical government should one try to take charge but I feel that it would be extremely difficult for any individual to gain enough power in our nation to become a dictator. Gaining control of American citizens is a lot like herding cats.
