He didn't resort to deadly force until he had no choice. Then when he did act, he did so in the correct way: sought cover, accurately returned fire.

To me this suggests training or at least some careful forethought and practice with his weapon. This is how responsible concealed carry is supposed to work (with the possible exception of having his carry gun too visible).
