The cross symbol is commonly used to represent a tombstone in the west.
Sure it originally came from Christianity but it seems to me it's moved beyond that over the years to have a generic meaning of death as well. Also it was erected shortly after the war so the monument has historical value.

A new monument that is made in the shape of a cross in defiance of current standards might be objectionable but I don't see the value of trying to rejigger the past to fit modern standards.

(With exceptions of course such as racist iconography that demeans people.)
