If you want to get an idea of this, Clint Eastwood's movie, Letters from Iwo Jima had a couple of seconds clip that was photographed by Japanese. It showed the LCT's coming towards shore and artillery shells, splashing in the water around them.

As I'm sure your father was, he was invited to, and attended the unveiling of the Iwo Jima memorial in D.C.
