5. We were renters in a condo complex for about 15 years.

That particular community was mostly homeowner ccupied, except for a few units that were rented out by their individual owners. Some time back, the board had made a rule against owners renting out units. Those that were already occupied by renters got grandfathered in, but (unbeknownst to us) were resented by those who would have preferred not to have to share their precious community with riffraff renters like us.

I won't list all of the annoying things that happened while we were living there, because it would take too long, but they included a management office (paid by the board to handle general upkeep) that was staffed with incredibly rude people and a few neighbors who would call the office to complain about every little thing rather than talking directly to resented riffraff renters like us. It gradually became apparent that we renters were second class citizenst, and it was not a great feeling!

We stayed as long as we did because it was a genuinely nice place to live, on the whole, and because our landlord was a peach who took care of things that needed taking care off while otherwise leaving us alone and rarely increasing the rent.

When he died, his son wanted to put the unit on the market. He lived hundreds of miles away, and was not interested in being a landlord, which was entirely understandable. We were ready to go by then anyway, so we started looking for a new place and moved when our lease ran out.

We are much happier where we are now, in a large apartment complex where there isn't a two tiered class system of homeowners snd renters.

Unfortunately, this place has gotten too expensive for us, so we're.looking again. If not for the cost, we'd stay here indefinitely.
