Type 2 is an inflammatory condition and serious COVID has lots of inflammation. Other ideas are the immune system might attack the insulin cells as colaterol damage. And finally the article suggests it might also be already afflicted individuals are getting diagnosed during their post COVID care as there are any undiagnosed prediabetics and actual undiagnosed diabetes.
