2. Just spitballing about this here, but I believe Fred Phelps did us a lot of damage

With his religious "Hate the Gays" campaign. Other sects observed the bamboozling vitriol he could stir and jumped right the hate-train, recognizing LGBTQ as easy targets of angst and shame.
But then to export it as well, dammit, just as we were making headway with equality.
Admittedly I'm a bit biased about the situation because it was the long arm of the Westboro idiots who made early teenage years a living hell. They have the blood of innocents on their hands.
