Illustrated below is a closer look at the growing number of hate crime incidents against sexual orientation during Trump’s first term in office, expected for an administration that has flamed hatred against LGBTQ Americans by stocking its ranks with anti-LGBTQ activists and ramped up inflammatory rhetoric, especially against transgender people.

Every November the FBI releases an Annual Hate Crime Statistics Report detailing the number of hate crime incidents reported in the U.S. for the year prior. The latest report, covering 2019, was released on November 16, 2020.

The numbers also tell a story consistent with the growing number of murders of transgender and gender non-conforming people over the last four years. In 2020 alone, at least 34 murders have been reported, the majority of which were Black and Latina transgender women – a number the HRC has dubbed “a culture of violence.”

However, there is hope for a less violent future in America. President-elect Joe Biden publicly thanked both “gay” and “transgender” voters in his victory speech, making him the first president-elect to ever do so.

2016 -- There were 6,063 single-bias incidents that involved 7,227 offenses, 7,509 victims, and 5,727 known offenders.
2017 -- There were 7,106 single-bias incidents that involved 8,126 offenses, 8,493 victims, and 6,307 known offenders
2018 -- There were 7,036 single-bias incidents that involved 8,327 offenses, 8,646 victims, and 6,188 known offenders.
2019 -- There were 7,103 single-bias incidents that involved 8,302 offenses, 8,552 victims, and 6,268 known offenders.

2016 -- The 58 multiple-bias incidents reported involved 94 offenses, 106 victims, and 43 known offenders.
2017 -- The 69 multiple-bias incidents reported involved 311 offenses, 335 victims, and 63 known offenders.
2018 -- The 84 multiple-bias incidents reported involved 169 offenses, 173 victims, and 78 known offenders.

2016 - 1,218 single-bias hate crime offenses were motivated by sexual orientation. Of these offenses:
62.8 percent were classified as anti-gay (male) bias.
21.5 percent were prompted by an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (mixed group) bias.
11.6 percent were classified as anti-lesbian bias.
2017 - 1,303 single-bias hate crime offenses were motivated by sexual orientation. Of these offenses:
58.2 percent were classified as anti-gay (male) bias.
24.6 percent were prompted by an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (mixed group) bias.
12.2 percent were classified as anti-lesbian bias.
2018 - 1,404 single-bias hate crime offenses were motivated by sexual orientation. Of these offenses:
59.8 percent were classified as anti-gay (male) bias.
25.1 percent were prompted by an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (mixed group) bias.
12.2 percent were classified as anti-lesbian bias.
2019 - 1,429 single-bias hate crime offenses were motivated by sexual orientation. Of these offenses:
61.8 percent were classified as anti-gay (male) bias.
