Look up the Kuwaiti Ambassador's daughter testifying about seeing babies pulled from their cribs and murdered in cold blood. She wasn't identified as the Ambassador's daughter, she never saw it, and she wasn't in Kuwait. The world fell for it then, too.
It seems to be a common trope to used demonize an enemy.
