The Egyptians expanded their buffer zone a few years ago by razing something like 1000 homes. That was after a Hamas cross border attack that killed around thirty Egyptian military people.

Eta I think Hamas wants the best bang for its buck, so Israel is the primary target. Attacking Egypt is emotionally satisfying but attacking Israel gets them the media attention they crave, especially in Europe.
