Sanae Takaichi has created history - becoming Japan's first female PM after securing majority votes from both the Lower and Upper Houses of parliament.

If you're just joining us, here's what to know:

Takaichi, from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, won 237 votes in the Lower House and 125 votes in the Upper House - a simple majority in both houses
Takaichi, also known as Japan's "Iron Lady" is the protege of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and is known for her staunch conservatism
This is a historic day for female representation in politics, which is slowly changing in Japan
Takaichi - Japan's fourth PM in five years - comes as the LDP finds itself mired in political scandal and is battling low public trust
Her win is significant, considering Japan's lagging gender equality record.
But some young Japanese women told the BBC that they are not sure the conservative Takaichi will advance their rights. "If you look into her political beliefs... she rather perpetuates the patriarchal system," one of them said
What's next: Now that the parliament has chosen its prime minister, a new cabinet will be announced. The members will then head to the imperial palace for an attestation ceremony and hold their first cabinet meeting
