Thus to differentiate between the two, people have invented new terms. For example many states in their traffic laws refer to bicycles as "Pedacycles" thus they include three and four wheelers provided the only propulsion system is done by some sort of manual effort (which can include the use of the arms).

Thus a lot of people are using the term "Bicyclist" to separate people who ride a bicycle propelled by manual propulsion as opposed to a person on a Motorcycle, that is propelled by some sort of engine.
