1. My sympathy for the NIMBYs is limited

They bought property next to railroad rights-of-way where the tracks, bridges, and cross-ties are still in place. In doing so, they made a bet that rail service would never resume, despite the fact that the plant was still there. That was a risk they should have seen before signing the contract.

They bet. They lost. They should have known better.

As far as I’m concerned, they can learn to live with the train noises. They can also thank the Almighty or whatever that the Tennessee Pass/Royal Gorge route is never going to be a high-traffic lign like BNSF’s Transcon or UP’s Sunset Route.
