I lived in Boston when the Red line extension was being built. It terminated in Cambridge at the Arlington border because at the time it was proposed some NIMBYs in Arlington and Lexington didn't want a direct line from Dorchester to their town. The sad part is that by the time the extension was built most people in Arlington would have loved a station or two rather than continuing to ride the slower bus lines to the subway.
