Frugal and Energy Efficient Living

(38,688 posts)The woodstove is located in the basement and I have one return grill and that's in the living room. What I'm going to do is remove the return duct and also the return drop to the furnace. The heat in the basement will naturally rise up the stairs into the kitchen and also thru the return grill in the living room. I could also turn on the furnace blower occasionally to more evenly distribute the air throughout the house.
In the summer, this will be my 'Yooper A/C' as the basement is much cooler then the rest of the house. With the return duct work removed, turning on the furnace blower will suck that cooler air out of the basement and distribute throughout the house. During the hot days here, I didn't mind one bit going down to the cool basement with a cup of cold coffee and scissors and spending time sitting in a chair there while cutting up cardboard and paper.
