When you fly, theres a core group of workers who you may not realize keep the travel industry running. We work for airline service providers. We're cabin cleaners, baggage handlers, and wheelchair attendants; we are the people who handle cargo and fuel planeswe are essential to your travel experience and up until recently, rarely recognized for the work we do.
In April, after years of fighting, airport service workers were recognized for the first time in a federal bill! This was an important first step, but I still struggle to afford necessities like paying my mortgage or keeping food on the table for my family.
Thats why today my fellow airport service workers and I are rallying ahead of American Airlines shareholder meeting.
Were demanding the airline use its power to ensure their airline service providers end poverty wages, respect workers' right to form a union, and commit to ending practices that leave behind the Black, brown, and immigrant workers who fuel this workforce.
We need you to SHARE so American feels the pressure, can you help us out?
Im a Trash Truck Driver at Charlottes airport and much of my day is spent servicing American Airlines. My body is paying for the long days of hauling trash. I work crazy hours to stay afloat but also because we dont have the staff to cover more hours. Were so understaffed I sometimes have to fill in as a cabin cleaner too.
American Airlines pays its CEO $15,000 an hour while many service workers are paid just $14 an hour. American is also consistently leading in passenger inconveniences that YOU as a traveler regularly have to deal with. American Airlines isnt meeting anyones expectations!
The actions over the next few days will echo recent worker momentum in all industries as Black, brown, Asian, immigrant, and white workers stand tall in our power.
This stockholder meeting is our chance to speak out, shake up, and disrupt the status quo. Join us!
