7. For some reason, people are fascinated with Trump.

Not just in GD2016 but in real life as well. Personally, I don't get it. I find Trump boring. I find the entire Republican Party boring.

The other factor that contributes to the general nastiness on DU is that discussion boards seem to attract people who have some sort of need to vent their anger. I imagine that they have serious problems in their lives that they are unable to deal with directly, such as an abusive boss or a troubled relationship. So they come here and attack someone they've never met. And they do this because they know there will be no real consequences. As much as Skinner wants to make DU a place for civilized discussion, I think it's a lost cause because of the anonymity of internet discussion.
