Sitting in a meeting with a Peer in the House of Lords in 2015... he said something very scary indeed [View all]

Just after the 2015 election, I was in a meeting with a Lord. It was about the impact of a new Tory policy on my industry, that was going to have the inevitable negative impact on social mobility. Cause Tories. We were discussing how we could possibly try and influence/change this new strategy with the Secretary of State and the Minister involved. This is what the (Conservative) Peer said (I am of course paraphrasing):

‘Don’t waste your time. They will not listen to you or to me. They have a majority for this first time in years and they are Kings of the Hill. They will do what they want. They do not care for your opinions, they are irrelevant.’

That was with a one nation conservative government with a majority in small double digits.

Now we have a populist right wing government with a much greater majority than that. They will not just think they are Kings of the Hill, they will think that they are Kings of the Universe. And with no effective opposition, their right-wing ego’s will rum amuck unchecked. Oh, goody.

They will do what they want now and there is nothing to stop them. I am resigned to it. Brexit in 3…2…1…
