Is this Pa. city's mayoral primary a barometer of Democrats' future? [View all]

The mayor’s race in Pennsylvania’s second-largest city not only features a primary challenge to the progressive Democratic incumbent but accusations that Trump-supporting Republican donors are behind the insurgency.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, who was elected the city’s first Black mayor in 2021, has launched a series of attacks on Democratic challenger and Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor following a bombshell report by the Guardian that found Republicans were “primarying” him by backing his opponent.

“I don’t want Trump operatives, his consultants, having any influence over the policies and procedures that come out of this election,” Gainey told PennLive.

O’Connor told PennLive that Gainey’s attacks are “laughable and very desperate.”
