Harrisburg teen playing with revolver accidentally killed friend [View all]
Harrisburg police have charged a 14-year-old in connection with the death of his friend in an accidental shooting, police announced Tuesday. The name of the juvenile and the specific charges were not released.
Police concluded the shooting Nov. 5 about 6 p.m. inside a home that killed Malachi John, 14, was a tragic accident. Malachi was known by his nickname Tarzan.
Investigators believe the suspect had cocked a revolver, and was trying to decock it when the hammer slipped from his hand, causing the gun to fire, said Dauphin County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Zawisky. The single round hit Malachi in the face, causing mortal brain injuries. It appears they were playing around, had a gun, and mishandled it and it accidentally discharged, Zawisky said. It appears both were very close friends. Its absolutely tragic.
After the shooting, the teen loaded his wounded friend into a vehicle and drove around looking for help. He spotted an ambulance about a mile away in the 100 block of South 13th Street and flagged them down for help.
