State spends millions on new water treatment plant at state home slated to close in three years [View all]

POLK, Pa. —

Action News Investigates has learned Pennsylvania is spending more than $4 million on a construction project at a state facility that is slated to close in three years.

Last month, the state Department of Human Services announced it was closing Polk Center, a home for persons with intellectual disabilities. The decision to close Polk and another state home has angered residents’ families and employees.

Documents show that just weeks before announcing the decision, the state signed contracts to build a water treatment plant at Polk.

The records show $4.2 million in contracts were signed on July 16, just four weeks before state officials announced the closure.
