Ohio lawmakers to seek new utility bill surcharges to rescue nuclear plants: What you need to know [View all]

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio House legislation expected to be introduced later this week would impose new customer surcharges to subsidize two nuclear plants in danger of closing. Here are four takeaways:

- FirstEnergy plans to close the Davis-Besse and Perry plants by 2021 amid competition from cheaper natural-gas plants.

- A draft version of the bill would add monthly surcharges of $2.50 for residential customers, $20 for commercial customers, and $250 to industrial customers.

- The draft bill would eliminate existing surcharges on energy-efficiency and peak reduction programs.

- House Speaker Larry Householder favors state help to keep the plants running.
