T he first has been mentioned - ballots are printed well in advance of each election (they have to be vetted, plus some are sent overseas)

The second is less well known - there's a legal difference between dropping out and suspending a campaign. "Suspending" means you just aren't campaigning any longer... but you remain on the ballot (and, more importantly, can continue raising funds to pay off campaign debts).
