It's official: North Carolina's top hatemonger, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, is running for governor [View all]

One of the worst-kept secrets in North Carolina politics was made official last Saturday at a rainy racetrack in rural Alamance County where, surrounded by his Republican friends, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson announced that he’s running for governor.

Robinson, who has made a name for himself with his hate speech on issues and topics like LGBTQ+ rights, women, guns and abortion, has some Republicans worried about his candidacy.

It’s not hard to see why some would be concerned about his candidacy when you consider just a few of his positions:

●Supports banning abortion in all cases and has called for abortion providers to face massive punishments.
●Has said that women are not meant to be leaders and that women have failed in their attempt to talk him "into submission."
●Has said that when a woman becomes pregnant her body is no longer her own and also called a woman who had an abortion a "heffer." It should be noted that Robinson has paid for at least one abortion himself.
●Has said that feminism is the work of the devil and his minions.
●Routinely refers to gay people as "filth" and transgender rights as "demonic."
●Has said loving God and being an LGBTQ+ ally are incompatible.
●Has said that if he were governor, he would support dismantling the legal rights of married same-sex couples.
●Is opposed to universal background checks and frequently headlines national gun events, often in the wake of mass shootings.
●Has proudly said that he has an AR-15 in case the government "gets too big for its britches."
●Has said he would eliminate science and history from elementary school.
●Has called for the North Carolina State Board of Education to be eliminated.
●Has led efforts to censor teachers from educating students about the true history of our nation.
●Has unapologetically made multiple antisemitic and Islamophobic comments.
●Has spread dangerous misinformation about the history of the Holocaust.

Though the assumption among many political prognosticators is that Robinson will run away with the Republican primary, there are no guarantees in politics.

Stein, Democrats and progressive organizations won't be the only ones focusing on Robinson's statements and beliefs, he will also face friendly fire from his Republican competitors. North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell has already accused Robinson of "attacking people instead of attacking the important problems that our citizens are facing” and former U.S. Rep. Mark Walker is expected to join the race in May and will likely have something to say about Robinson as well.

There are many North Carolinians who don't know much about Robinson yet and there is still plenty of time for everyone across the state to learn about him and his disturbing positions.

Mark Robinson’s extreme views are dangerous for North Carolina. He has threatened violence against the government, actively spreads misinformation, and has built a legacy of hate and division that endangers the lives of North Carolinians.
