It not only affects workers at oil companies, but it stretches out to other sectors of the economy such as the steel industry, banking, and government employees who will suffer from budget cuts. The loss of government employees also means that the general population will see a reduction in services provided to them.

It will also have a negative impact on charitable giving. In Texas, the oil companies are generous providers for college scholarships, civic clubs, and the arts.
