Under proposal, Democratic loyalists could kill minor parties [View all]

Under a proposal being seriously considered by a commission rewriting state campaign laws, loyalists to New York’s Democratic Party would have the opportunity to unilaterally kill off minor political parties every four years.

That’s according to the liberal Working Families Party, which believes that the commissioner broaching the proposal, state Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs, is trying to kill off the WFP at Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s behest.

Jacobs did not disagree with the WFP’s interpretation of how the proposal could play out. But Jacobs said the WFP’s concerns are unfounded and conspiratorial.

“They really are operating under a new level of paranoia,” Jacobs said in an interview on Thursday.
