A sixth-grade teacher in Manchester, NH, has been arrested after police say she exchanged inappropriate emails with a student. Jennifer Glidden, 50, of Exeter was taken into custody Friday afternoon. Glidden, who teaches at Manchester's Parkside Middle School, has been charged with certain use of computer services prohibited.
Police said Glidden exchanged more than 100 emails that were sexual in nature with a student under the age of 16 between Nov. 2 and Dec. 4. A school resource officer was alerted of the messages by school administrators on Tuesday, Manchester police said.
"We believe (there was) no (physical) contact whatsoever between the teacher and the child under the age of 16, but there was inappropriate activity on the email between the two parties," said Manchester police Lt. Brian O'Keefe.
In a statement, Manchester schools Superintendent Bolgen Vargas said: "The safety of our students is our highest priority. Immediately after learning of the potential misconduct on the part of Ms. Jennifer Glidden we took swift action. We began an investigation, placed Ms. Jennifer Glidden on administrative leave, and contacted the police and other authorities. Behavior of this type is reprehensible and will not be tolerated."
Glidden has been released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 20.
