The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call around 1:38 a.m. near the temporary levee on Highway 333 near Hamburg. A 2015 Hyundai Azera driven by Christopher Hawes of Coffeyville, Kansas, went westbound, drove over the levee and ended up nose-first in the water. Hawes was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.

A short time later, a deputy on patrol observed a semi in flood water near Highway 2 and 195th Avenue. Authorities used a boat to perform a water rescue of the driver — Abdihakin Dirye of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Authorities say Dirye drove his semi around two barricades and became stranded on an inundated roadway.
