Statehouse Insider: It's come to this in the governor's race [View all]

There’s less than a month to go before the election so let’s recap where things stand now.

The week began with a report by public radio state WBEZ in Chicago about Gov. BRUCE RAUNER’s administration’s efforts to keep the lid on information about the Legionnaire’s outbreak at the Quincy veterans’ home. Next was a leaked report from the Cook County Inspector General that Democrat J.B. PRITZKER’s effort to lower the property taxes on a mansion he owns through toilet removal was a “scheme to defraud” taxpayers.

That report prompted Illinois’ Republican congressional delegation to demand the U.S. attorney investigate. Subsequently, Democratic Attorney General LISA MADIGAN announced a criminal investigation into the Rauner administration’s efforts to keep the Quincy situation under wraps.

All of that was before Wednesday’s debate where Rauner and Pritzker traded shots with each other over those developments. Each man then held a news conference Thursday to further bash away at each other.
